“I never thought I could see it get worse, but here I am. ”
Dr. Mimi Syed: Hi, I’m Dr. Mimi Syed, board certified emergency medicine physician. I’m here in Gaza for the second time. The things that I’m noticing are quite worse than my previous trip here. I’m noticing more malnourishment, severe malnourishment for children. Their hair is lighter than usual, when you see pictures of them before and after. It’s a sign that the body is not producing melanin. They also have hypopigmentation on their skin. Which is another sign that they’re severely malnourished. Every child seems to have a skin condition, some sort of rash, like a scabies or impetigo. And a sign that there’s very poor sanitary conditions. The dentition of children in almost every child has, you know, a necrotic or rotten teeth. And in baby teeth that just should not be the case. It’s a stark difference in what I noticed before. The healthcare workers seem a lot more malnourished than they were in the past. And the level of exhaustion and burnout is so noticeably different and worsened. The children here are hungry and thirsty for knowledge, education. You know, and this is just an unfortunate condition that just keeps getting worse. And I never thought I could see it get worse, but here I am. It’s devastating and it needs to stop. It’s a very futile situation and things just need to change.
